Congretype is Eskom Accredited Energy Service Company (ESCO) and has been involved in
various Energy Efficiency projects under the Eskom IDM Rebate Programs. The company is also
eminently placed to advice its clients on various energy efficiency and demand side
management issues, which are of paramount importance to them.

The areas of expertise of Congretype in this regard include:
Demand Side Management Planning
Energy Audit
End Use Efficiency Improvement Programmes
Monitoring & Verification (M&V)
Life Cycle Assessment
Training and Capacity Building

Demand Side Management Planning

Demand Side Management (DSM) represents various measures undertaken by the Government
and Power Utility companies on the consumer side of the meter to reduce peak demand or
overall energy requirement. DSM not only provides opportunities for avoiding, reducing or
postponing the need for installation of new generation, transmission and or distribution
capacity, but also provide opportunities for reducing the need for the distribution utilities to
purchase costly power to meet peak demand.
Congretype DSM programmes have been growing over the past 4 years and expected to
increase significantly in the medium term as we have commenced with the local manufacture
of energy efficient lighting systems.
Our Load Research, sound Demand Forecasting Techniques, and Load Profiling are DSM prerequisites
which have drawn us into a market leading position. Further to that, we have
developed the expertise in the development of techniques to carry out Load Research to design,
develop, implement and evaluate DSM Programs and Projects. Congretype can also assist
utilities in establishment of institutional mechanism such as Energy Storage which can
significantly deal with Peak Demand and the provision of emergency power requirement.

Energy Audit
An Energy Audit is a systematic exercise to identify end-uses that consume a significant amount
of energy, estimate the efficiency in each of these end-uses and devise methods for improving
efficiency and curbing losses and wasteful use. Its primary objective is to determine ways to
reduce the Specific Energy Consumption (SEC). Energy Audit is an effective tool in defining and
pursuing a comprehensive energy management programme.
Our Effective management of energy-consuming systems can lead to significant cost and energy
savings as well as increased comfort, lower maintenance, and extended equipment life. We also
provide advisory support in the complete chain of Energy Management starting from
Preliminary Energy Audit, Detailed Energy Audit till conclusion of negotiations, and finalization
of technology providers for successful implementation of the Project.

End Use Efficiency Improvement Programme
Significant potential exists for reduction in electricity demand through implementation of end
use efficiency and conservation programmes in different consumer sectors such as Municipal,
Agricultural, Residential, Commercial, Mining and Industrial Sectors.
Congretype has the necessary capability to design and implement sector specific ‘End Use
Energy Efficiency Programmes’ that enable utilities to target specific set of consumers. We also
have the necessary expertise and capability to develop and implement ‘Outreach’ programmes
for creation of awareness about energy efficiency issues.

Monitoring & Verification (M&V)
The long term success of energy management projects are often hampered by the inability of
the project partner to agree on an accurate, successful M&V plan. M&V systems and practices
are becoming increasingly important in South Africa as the number and scale of Energy
Efficiency projects and investment has been increasing. Such programmes can be implemented
and scaled up only with effective tools to measure and monitor savings through a uniform
yardstick or benchmark tools. Further, financial payments are linked to the performance of the
project (energy savings), which require M&V capability.
Congretype has developed the necessary expertise to assist various stakeholders such as energy
services providers, utilities, consumers and Financial Institutions in providing M&V Services
such as development of M&V Protocol, Development of Baselines, Incorporation of M&V in
Contracts and actual M&V.

Life Cycle Assessment
Today, markets are rapidly changing and consumers are becoming more aware of
environmental issues. It is not simple to find solutions to issues such as, environmental
performance of the manufacturing processes, environmental impact of products, waste
management and cost reduction. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool, which helps
organizations address future challenges. Life Cycle Assessment identifies the material, energy
and waste flows associated with a product over its entire life-cycle to determine its
environmental impact. LCA evaluates the environmental performance of processes, products
and services, and also identifies potential cost savings.
Congretype has developed expertise in Life Cycle Assessment to resolve complex decision
making process by identification and understanding of environmental attributes for processes
and products.

Training and Capacity Building
Most South African energy consumers have very limited knowledge and understanding about
DSM and hence, they are not in a position to conceive, formulate, design, implement, monitor
and evaluate DSM programmes or projects. Organizationally, they have neither the
infrastructure nor skill-set to undertake DSM activities. If companies in South Africa were to
fully capture the available DSM potential on a sustained basis they would be no lead to increase
the Power Generation capacity in the country.
Further, training and capacity building of the personnel in the Efficiency will need to be develop
in order to meet the skills demand. Congretype has observed the eminent skills deficit and has
partner with the Department of Trade and Industry to Incubate Black Owned SMMEs that are
already involved in the industry to become fully fledged Energy Service Companies that can
independently develop and implement their own Energy Efficiency projects. This incubation
approach has driven by our inherent belief in “learning by doing” approach and we have
developed the necessary expertise to design and develop ‘Training and Capacity Building’
programmes in the area of DSM and Energy Efficiency.

Renewable Energy Generation, Green Business Incubators
As a pioneering Renewable Energy Developer we have established capacity and knowledge
base in the areas of Detailed Engineering Feasibility Studies, Environmental Impact Assessments,
Financial Engineering and Resource Assessments to ascertain commercial viability of the
technology options. Our Renewable Energy Feasibility studies are performed under a strictly
vendor neutral basis to ensure that the optimum technology solutions, and services are
recommended for implementation.

These governmental efforts, combined with general interest in clean energy, are expanding the
market for such products and services. Emerging entrepreneurs can take advantage of this
opportunity in a number of ways. Congretype has developed internal capacity to design social
and ecologically sustainable projects in the poor rural communities utilizing technologies such
as: Solar Home Systems, Solar Cookers, Solar Ovens and Energy Efficiency projects.

Smart Climate Agriculture
Carbon Sequestration in Communities of Extreme Poverty has become a natural means by
which to empower impoverished rural communities. Congretype has piloted a Sweet Sorghum
Value Chain Development project on a 1ha plot in Burgersfort for the Biofuels sector in line
with the country’s Biofuels Strategy. In addition to a primary use for direct consumption and
animal feed, the sweet sorghum grain and juice are good raw materials for industrial
production of bioethanol. The distinct attributes of the extracted juice and grain, either as
native or modified form, are very attractive for a broad range of food and non-food application
including paper, animal feed stock, vermicompost, pharmaceutical, organic fertilizer and
biomass materials for electricity generation.

Green Transportation
Many forms of transportation (such as traditional, gasoline-engine cars) contribute to climate
change by releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Gas-powered cars also create smog
in our cities, which can harm overall public health. Green transportation businesses, offers
alternative transportation solutions that can benefit both the environment and community
health. This in many number of ways, being achieved by various state run projects and privately
funded initiates.

In order to effect a more robust rollout of green transportation programs, Congretype has
embarked on an ambitious Public Use Bicycle scheme which will involve Bike Share and Rural
Transportation program. Congretype’s assembled pool of transportation experts, business
development, marketing, technical and automotive service experts has allowed the company in
formulating innovative business and financing strategies for the program.

This program will be extended towards the incubation of disabled community members in the
Bicycle Repair and Maintenance support service. As the success of such a service not only
depends on the environmental or transportation benefits, we strongly believe that
accentuating the benefits to economic levels will go a long way in addressing the country’s
social ills. To this effect Congretype has developed a Master Plan to Manufacture and Assemble
bicycles locally, through the manufacturing of the bicycle components at a single centralized
plant and the assembly decentralized to regions. We believe by so doing this will stimulate the
regional economies whilst at the same time curbing economic migration patterns that have
become a disturbing norm.
